1954 BMW R-Series for sale
Current customer rating: (3) based on 18 votes
OK, are the Big Boys and Girls ready to play? We all know what we have here for sale, the most desirable post war production BMW, the RXX. Not only is this XXXX RXX, it is the one I (Tim Stafford) restored for Jeff Dean, it is the one showed at the Pebble Beach Concourse and took Xnd place with (No one was going to beat the RX, Pebble Beach already had shirts made with the RX on it). It is also the bike that landed me on BMW magazine covers, well it and my fancy suit did ;-)
What is Jeff's RXX worth? We all what to know that. All we know is the last that sold in the public eye NEEDED restoration and went for around $XX,XXX.
Soooooo, pleas don't ask what Jeff wants, it's time to see what RXX restored to my standards will fetch.
I am selling this for Jeff, pleas call/email me for more info and pix if needed. Tim Stafford XXX-XXX-XXXX
The restoration was finished in XXXX and put XXX miles on it. It's very strong and is dam fast for old bike. think it will outrun any RXXS have built. It has RXXS pistons and RXXS XXmm intake valves.
The bike/VIN has been verified by Andreas Harz of Mobile Tradition Group Archives on May XXth XXXX.
After VIN pix were sent as well as the timing gear tolerance number, Andreas stated "So everything is o.k., here's the data we have on this bike :
The BMW RXX VIN XXXXXX was manufactured on July XXst, XXXX and delivered on October XXth, XXXX to the BMW importer Butler & Smith in New York City."
The VIN on the motor and frame head tube are very clear. But the head plate is reproduction one, the original one was lost years ago. have one that Nick had done on the bike. am also in the process of doing one that looks way more correct and original.
So were did this bike come from/who has had it's hands on it for all these years?
Jeff Dean bought this bike from Nick Emmanouilides in XXXX. Nick worked at Butler & Smith, but get not get the bike through that connection. Nick was visiting Perry Bushong of Fort Worth BMW around XXXX. One of Perry's customers (pro soccer player) had the bike in Perry's shop and ended working deal with Nick. Nick brought the bike back to life, mounted side car on it and drove it until time to sell to Jeff. And that's about all the back history we have on the bike.
Now lets get into the details:
Tear down:
In our restorations everything comes apart, (horn & speedometer if not new), motor, transmission, final drive, swing arms, shocks, wheels/hubs, mean everything. Feel free to test me on that one, but in XX+ years have been doing restorations people still don't understand how far take things down/apart. Yes, even the drive shaft was restored.
Before teardown we check all our bikes for alignment. If any of our bikes are off, they go to Vern at GT Enterprise to get them straightened. This bike had side car on it, so we sent it to Vern.
Paint work:
We have everything that needs paint sand blasted down to bare steel, body worked and primed with PPG DP epoxy primer, PPG part filler primmer used as needed over the DP and all parts top coated with PPG part Concept DCC urethane. The only parts not top coated with DCC is the barrels and lever perches, those are top coated in PJX gloss high heat black. The PJX works and looks better on those parts.
After everything is painted we wet sanded(XXXX & XXXX grit) all sheet metal and then buffed to show finish.
The silver on the hub caps, air cleaner and oil pan all match and done by us.
Pinstripes are hand done by Robert Gagnon of Lines and Designs.
There is NO POWDER COAT on this bike, other than that tinny lower front tank brace and the two tinny clips that hold the leather swinging pillion to the rubber solo. These very small parts are new and look to be powder coat.
Plating and polishing:
We alway stick to stock/OEM on plating. Everything gets fresh plating or polishing unless it's new part.
Manganese phosphate:
Most of the fasteners in XXXX were original in this or black oxide. Black oxide rust very EZ, so if it was OEM in one of these X, we go with the longevity of the manganese phosphate.
Most all the hardware on this bike has the original german parkings, Xmm fasteners are at XXmm wrench size (Europe went to XXmm wrench size in 'XX) and the all Xmm fasteners are the Xmm wrench size (Europe went to Xmm wrench size in "XX). You will also notice the all lower (Xmm bolts) the front fender stay fasteners are black on chrome. You would think they would be chrome or cadmium, but from our research. Our RXX parts book, as well as photos we have looked at of original XXXX bikes, they are black. My parts book sates Pho., short for phosphate.
You will also notice our carburetor parts in this.
Cadmium:
Some of the fasteners were cadmium in 'XX, motor, transmission and final drive.
All Xmm fasteners are still the correct XXmm wrench size (Europe switched to XXmm wrench size on Xmm fasteners in 'XX).
Chrome:
If the bike came with chrome part, we keep it that way. The used parts that can be saved get fresh chrome such as the intake air tubes, drive shaft, fender stays and grab rail. The mufflers, bars, bar risers, spokes are New and in correct chrome. You will also notice the Xmm bolts for the chrome fender stays and rear grab rail are chrome, with the correct Xmm wrench size heads.
The axle nuts are flashed chromed, as stated in the parts book.
Stainless Steel:
These bike came with NO stainless steel. Other than the new blackened center stand pin, we used NO stainless steel. So yes, even our axles and push rod tubes are chrome steel.
Polishing:
All the smooth aluminum bits get very nice (perhaps to nice) of polishing.
This bike has the original rims that get checked for true by Buchanan's spoke and rim before polishing.
Glass Blasting:
All sand cast parts (motor, heads, transmission, final drive, hubs, brake plate, etc.) are stem cleaned, then pressure blasted (aluminum oxide, garnet, old glass mix), then blasted at low presser (to peen pores closed) with new, large glass beads to get very nice original from the mold high sheen.
We use NO clear or paint over these parts. Clears will fail and look incorrect from the start. If you want to ride these bikes in the rain or have damp or salty environment just wipe all castings down with WDXX. From me in San Diego, just keep them clean by wiping them down with white rage soaked in wax and grease remover (like PPG Acryli-clean).
After blasting, cases are blown out with compressed air then stem cleaned again to remove any beads.
Speedometer Restoration:
Was done by local shop in San Diego, only needing cleaning, new paint on pointer, new chrome rim. had them reset miles on speedometer to zero.
Horn Restoration:
NO Restoration here, this bike has New Old Stock BOSCH horn. How nice is that!?
Battery:
We found dead original looking New Old Stock one. It is DRY, never had acid. We did test rides/miles with another batter, but left this very tasty NOS one dry and uncharged of corse.
You know what to do if you need it working, but there is good chance this bike will be for show in it's next home.
But we all know this bike will run without battery. The battery has nothing to do with the running of this bike, the battery is only needed to run the lights when the bike is at low speed/idle.
Motor Work:
This motor looked very good inside, but was of corse completely torn down, cleaned and inspected by myself.
Crank needed only light rebuild at Cycle Works.
Nick had recently bored to new RXXS pistons (higher compression than RXX), so we stayed with them.
Most of us do not like the barrel roller rear main bearing BMW used, so this motor was rebuilt with new SKF XXXX CX main bearings, front and rear.
New armature and camshaft bearings installed as well as new seals, gaskets, rings and valve guides.
Flywheel upgraded to RXX one, as well as later end plate and new Xmm clutch plate".
This motor runs great and sound evil! think it has throatier note due to larger XXmm RXXS intake valve Nick fitted.
This bike has done XXXmph in third, it's no joke! Surprised me and lot of guys (many on new bikes) during the Quail gather ride/show in Carmel CA.
One guy stated after the run You just rode away from us. looked down at me speedo and we were doing XX!) He was on new Aprilia, so I'm guessing if his and our speedo read the same, this old soldier can still hall the mail.
Motor Electrical:
Magneto was re-magnetized by Chris Berrington Motor Works. New points and condenser.
Transmission:
Rebuild with lot of new parts including shift dogs and kick start paw.
Final drive:
Not much needed but seals and gasket.
Drive shaft:
Again, re-chromed/restored back to original with the later non polished sand cast bell/cover.
Carbs:
Correctly restored in house by me and the guys. No funky plating on the screws and hardware, all is in fresh Manganese Phosphate and new parts used as needed.
Correct nickel on drain screws. The body's were carefully cleaned and glass blasted. These have the correct needled and float top, not the incorrect modern lever tops.
Hubs & Wheels:
Hubs come completely apart to inspect and cleaned, then bearings repacked.
As for the brake shoes, have them relined. The linings have used are glued on like modern shoes and the lining works better then any of the new rivet on linings have bought in past years.
OEM aluminum rims are laced up with new chrome steel spokes, re-cad plated spoke retainers, then OEM Metzeler block tires are mounted. Notice the valve stem caps and knerled nuts are nickel plated OEM ones. No black plastic valve stem caps or hex nuts on my stems.
I'm going blind spending all day to type this listen out, but feel free to call me at the shop or email me for more pix and info have missed.
I have been doing ground up restorations as full time business for XX+ years and have nothing to hide.
I stay in business by good word of mouth and only want you to have good things to say when you get this bike.
I normally quietly sell bikes behind closed doors without many people knowing what my bikes sell for. This is the very Xnd time have listed one of my bikes on Ebay, however some customers have done so in the past.
I am normally paid XX-XXK for restoring plunger type BMW, not including to cost of the bike.
Jeff Dean spent over $XX,XXX (after discounts) with me, but he gave me nice bike to start with and that was in XXXX.
I can fax his invoice if needed.
I understand many cannot see or understand my level of restoration, less even have the means to pay for this level and even less can justify paying for it. However am blessed with the people that are willing to pay for my OCD level of detail on these bikes.
Thanks bunch for taking look,
Tim Stafford
