Yamaha RD400C RD400 - Totally Restored, Matching Numbers, Marine Blue for sale
Current customer rating: (3) based on 21 votes
Here we have very lovely XXXX Yamaha RDXXXC the first of the RD XXXs.
After putting in so much money and time into this RD, dont really want to sell it but other priorities have taken over.
I bought this bike from chap in the US and personally imported it about XX months ago. paid all the import taxes, got dating certificate from the VJMC and it is now UK registered on XXXX 'P' plate with VX in my name. It sailed through the MOT (which expires December XXXX). It has the all important matching engine and frame numbers. As far as Im aware, the only differences between US and UK models was that the US models had smaller petrol tank, a sealed headlight and red indicator lenses.
The bike has been completely dismantled and subject to full restoration which includes:-
Engine sent off to Nick at RD Bitz for full restoration and rebuild which included rebore, crank overhaul, new pistons, seals, reconditioned gearbox fitted, Oil pump serviced, cases vapour blasted and side cases and barrels repainted in satin black. The motor starts easily and runs great as you would expect but still needs bit of running in as it has done very few miles since put it all back together.
Nick also blasted the frame and repainted it.
Nick also overhauled the original brake calipers and master cylinders to include new pistons, seals and powdercoated the calipers. have fitted new hoses and bled the brakes.
I sourced UK spec petrol tank in excellent condition and sent all the tin-ware off to Andy's Bike Services who knows thing or two about correct RD paintwork. I can assure you that the colour is Marine Blue the best RD colour in my opinion. The pictures seem to suggest different blue but it definitely has that greenish hue to it in the flesh. Andy also fitted new decals.
Carbs were put through my ultrasonic cleaning tank and also fitted new carb kits jets, seals, float valves, needles etc.
New heavy duty clutch kit from yambits new frictions, steels and springs and also fitted new NOS clutch basket as some of the fingers were not smooth enough for my liking. have used MOTUL mineral gearbox oil as find it suits classic clutches and boxes very well.
Original bolts replated and used wherever possible.
New (NOS) reed valves fitted.
New points and condensers. Ignition timing set at standard (X.Xmm BTDC).
I put my soda blaster to work on the wheels which brought them up to as near as possible to original condition (those of you who remember these the first time around will recall that the alloys were ??XX option back in XXXX). Whilst had the wheels off fitted new bearings.
New chain and sprockets fitted together with new chain adjusters.
New tyres fitted.
Exhaust downpipes rechromed. The original silencers have not been rechromed mainly because did not think they needed to be. They are not as shiny as the headers but still look pretty good to me.
New headlamp holders.
Original wiring and main electrical components retained and professionally overhauled by Chris at CT Motorcycle Services at cost of ??XXX
Original front forks were in very good condition so left well alone.
I fitted new pattern rear mudguard. The front is original but does have one or two small dings. I havn't felt the need to change it but did pick up new pattern one (which mimics the original very well) which the winning bidder is welcome to.
New rubber parts fitted (eg handlebar grips, footrests, side panel and tank fitments, battery strap, fuel and oil lines etc).
New Yamaha self cancelling indicator and flasher units.
New cables throughout.
New HX headlamp with UK dip pattern.
New battery
Original seat in excellent condition soda blasted the base and repainted it. Cover and chrome strips are really good.
New oil lines fitted clear ones to be on the safe side for first running but im sure have black ones somewhere.
The bike was sold to me as XXXX mile example, but unfortunately the seller 'kept back' the original speedo. For the purposes of getting the MOT done, have sourced another which shows XXXXX. However, given the engine rebuild and other restoration work, recorded mileage is academic anyway
The ignition, seat/helmet lock and the steering lock are all original and are all operated by the same key.
I obtained (part) NOS toolkit for it, including the pouch.
There are couple of small jobs that still need to be completed :=
X. I bought new HX headlight lens and rim from Yambits but it does not fit the original shell very well (it is secure it just does not line up properly). Perhaps the shell is little out of shape but simply don't have the time to sort it and it hasn't stopped me riding it.
X. Although the indicators were working for the MOT, they have recently stopped working. As mentioned above, had fitted correct new self-cancelling and flasher units. suspect the handlebar switch as all the wiring/earths seem to be in order.
X. Speedo is bit erratic.
I have ton of receipts for the work and parts bought.
I value my XXX% feedback rating and so please get in touch should you have any questions. I am confident have covered everything but there may be something that occurs to you that may have missed. I have tried to be as honest as can but nothing beats seeing the bike in the flesh so if you want to view please send message. I will release my mobile number on request if you want to chat about it or arrange viewing (I will need you to give me landline number and email address).
Please, no silly offers or part exchanges. There is reserve which will not be disclosed and the auction will run to the end unless get an acceptable offer to close before the reserve is reached. The bike is about to be advertised elsewhere so the auction may well be closed early (unless the reserve has been met). Have look at completed listings on ebay and you will see that an identical bike (without matching numbers) sold recently for almost ??Xk and similar condition (matching numbers) model sold for over ??Xk.
Happy for the bike to go abroad but you will need to arrange crating and pick-up. I cannot get the bike to port. Bike is located near Ashford, Kent.
Deposit of ??XXX by paypal within XX hours of the auction ending. Balance by cash on collection. I am unable to deliver but you could ride it home!
Good luck and thanks for viewing. Tony
